Marvel Comics is throwing a new wrinkle into the variant covers wars, introducing what they claim is the first ever “shrinking” variant. The Direct Market-only cover by Ed McGuinness will of course be for January’s Ant-Man #1, the first issue of the new ongoing series starring Scott Lang by Nick Spencer and Ramon Rosanas.

Each “shrinking” cover will be individually numbered (i.e. the print run will be limited to retailer orders) and each cover will feature an Ant-Man in a different size – no two covers will be exactly alike claims the publisher.

 

“This is completely unlike any cover we’ve ever attempted,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel, in a press release. “We’ve even had to utilize new technologies to make it happen. Each variant is completely unique. Each and every cover will feature a different sized Ant-Man. No two are identical!”

Marvel Cosmic fans may have finally had enough of Brian Michael Bendis and his Guardians of the Galaxy.

When word became known that Marvel Studios was moving forward on a major motion picture based on Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy comic book, the head honchos at Marvel Comics canceled their run, in essence firing the cosmic duo off the titles.

Bendis was named as the successor, with many people considering Bendis a backstabber in addition to highjacking DnA's title, which again inspired a $750 million dollar movie.

Now with Bendis' recent attempt to explain the fate of Richard Rider, which interestingly enough was also first written by DnA in the best selling The Thanos Imperative, it's looking like fans are coming to their senses.

Tom Brevoort was already questioned about the poor quality of the Richard Rider story in recent Bendis issues of Guardians of the Galaxy, which saw numerous misspellings and questionable art choices, with Brevoort blaming fans for - get this -  actually wanting the story to be told.

Now the social network Reddit is responding as a fan has called for a boycott of Bendis' Guardians of the Galaxy #21.

I am on board with this. Plus his handling of the GOTG kind of sucks. I miss the old run.

he should probably have paid more attention to Thanos Imperative, given that what he's writing is basically its followup. It's like if I tried to write a sequel to No Country For Old Men without actually watching the film.

I don't mind the stories so much as the characters. Most of the Guardians have been rewritten to the point where they might as well be new characters. Only, they're not. And the fact that that he's kept the names and labels means that any other writer who actually wanted to use the established characters can't, because Bendis' OC characters are masquerading under their names. The only reason Marvel is pushing new cosmic material is because of the movie, and the movie only exists because of how well the 2008 run was received. Surely you can understand people being upset when the new material doesn't reflect the stuff that parented it in the first place?

I mean, his job is literally to write comics. Having some understanding of the comics he's writing for seems like it would be part of that job, no? Does Marvel really not have editors who check things like this?

Bendis appears to have no respect for this cosmic saga because the characters feel very different to who Abnett and Lanning.

Abnett & Lanning spent years revitalizing the cosmic side of Marvel and crafted one of the greatest comic book epics of all time. Then Bendis took over, disregarded key events, and changed everyone's personalities until they were almost unrecognizable. It's like he completely missed the point of what made the A&L stuff such a fan favorite. I've always been a big Bendis supporter but even I have to admit that he made a clusterf--k out of this one.

I wish there was some sort of Omnibus of all the cosmic Omnibus' for Annihilation through Thanos Imperative.

I only read the first Bendis issue, and I normally like his stuff, but thought it was woeful compared to the DnA run. Still not got any better then?

Sure, Bendis ignores everything that happened in the Thanos Imperative, I mean everything, literally everything, cant even spell Richard Rider's name right (Ryder). All major points in the story line were ignored. And that is not the worst thing, even ignoring all that, he took a 2 page story and dragged it across three issues with a shitty resolution that makes no sense. We are on issue 20 of Gotg, and nothing really interesting has happened...F--- BENDIS

i've hated it the whole time anyway. it's been typical bendis: absolutely no plotting and every character sounds the same.

I don't hate him, but I think it boils down to this; With Avengers, he completely revamped a comic that wasn't very good at the time, and it was much better for it. With GotG, he completely revamped a comic that was already one of the best and well loved comics around, and it is much worse for it.

Amen, brother. People need to wake up and stop supporting garbage.

Fans are also upset over Marvel's decision to replace Richard Rider with an "idiot" (the creator's own words) that they dub "NINO" (Nova In Name Only). The good news is that the NINO replacement is selling less than Richard Rider, and fans also voted Richard Rider a favorite choice for the Marvel Heroes 2015 video game, and Rider was the best-selling action figure of the Guardians of the Galaxy Infinite movie line.

Regarding Bendis' Guardians of the Galaxy and its high sales, Tom Brevoort stated it had nothing to do with Bendis writing the title, but everything to do with the movie interest.

Similar to Joe Quesada stating sales weren't the factor in Abnett and Lanning's cancellation, former Marvel Cosmic Editor Bill Rosemann, who was also in essence fired from the Marvel Cosmic titles, recently stated sales on DnA's books were "rock solid." Rosemann was also responsible for Rocket Raccoon becoming a member of the Guardians, with Rocket now a household name.

Il mistero dietro alle immagini teaser della settimana scorsa non è più tale: il nuovo progetto “super” il cui numero #1 verrà pubblicato a Febbraio 2015 dalla Image è Secret Identities, serie scritta da Brian Joines (Noble Causes) e Jay Faerber (New Warriors, Noble Causes) e illustrata da Ilias Kyriazis (Galaxy Quest) e Charlie Kirchoff (Doctor Who).

Le identità segrete del titolo sono quelle del gruppo The Front Line, formato per combattere un’invasione aliena sventata già all’inizio del primo numero. Ora che la minaccia immediata è stata sventata il team deve trovare i propri equilibri e accogliere il nuovo arrivato Crosswind, giovane e apparentemente volenteroso eroe ma che in realtà potrebbe rivelarsi la il nemico più terribile.

In un’intervista a CBR gli autori hanno svelato qualche informazione in più su The Front Line: la base operativa della squadra sarà a Toronto ma non tutti i membri sono canadesi. Luminary, ad esempio, è la figlia del Presidente degli USA, mentre Vesuvius è un antico romano e Gaijin un’aliena.

Parlando delle difficoltà nel creare un racconto corale in grado di definire bene i singoli personaggi, Joines, Faerber e Kyriazis hanno anche indicato i supergruppi (e i loro autori) che hanno ammirato di più e preso a modello:
Faerber – New Teen Titans di Wolfman/Perez, X-Men di Claremont/Byrne/Smith, Alpha Flight di Byrne e gli Avengers di Harras/Epting.
Joines – Alpha Flight di Byrne, i Campioni Marvel e Nextwave di Ellis/Immonen.
Kyriazis – Gli X-Men degli anni ’70.

Alex Alonso ha confermato ai microfoni di CBR che la serie chiuderà fra marzo ed aprile.

Alonso è stato abbastanza telegrafico in merito:

Sì, stanno per chiudere la loro run e alle loro condizioni. Avevano una storia da raccontare che stanno per portare a termine e sono molto curioso di vedere cosa faranno prossimamente.

Interessante è soprattutto la parte sul futuro del team creativo: si prospetta un nuovo rilancio per Daredevil in concomitanza con la serie tv sempre per mano di Waid e Samnee oppure i due sono stati dirottati su altri progetti?

Incalzato da CBR Alonso parla anche di altre due chiusure: She-Hulk ed Elektra.

Sulla prima l’E-i-C dice che sapendo già degli impegni crescenti di Soule la serie era stata pensata con un formato “a stagioni” e quindi per essere chiusa in 12 numeri più o meno, per Elektra invece si parla del tipico caso di una “ottima serie che non sopravvive al mercato”.

Marvel is assembling a team of time-traveling Avengers from the past, present and future to fight mega-villain Ultron in three oversized comics, slated for release just in time for the much anticipated Marvel Studios blockbuster “Avengers: Age of Ultron” next spring.

The 90-page “Ultron Forever” story, which will unfold in “Avengers: Ultron Forever” No. 1, “New Avengers: Ultron Forever” No. 1 and “Uncanny Avengers: Ultron Forever” No. 1, aims to introduce casual readers to the robot baddie in addition to appealing to devoted fans’ nostalgia. And since comic book newcomers are more familiar with the big-screen incarnations of Marvel’s mightiest than the African American Captain America and female Thor currently in the pages of comics, time travel seemed a clever way to bring more familiar versions of the superheroes to the story, said Tom Brevoort, Marvel senior vice president of publishing and executive editor.

The “Ultron Forever” books, to be penned by Al Ewing (“Loki: Agent of Asgard,” “Mighty Avengers”) and illustrated by comics veteran Alan Davis, will gather the current iterations of Black Widow, the Vision and the female Thor as well as classic versions of Thor and the Hulk, James “Rhodey” Rhodes as Iron Man, and a never-before-seen future Captain America — the daughter of Netflix-bound Marvel heroes Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. They are ostensibly transported through time via Doctor Doom’s time machine in order to defeat Ultron, though there might be more to their arrival than is initially revealed, Ewing said.

The tale is set some 50 years from now in a dystopian future in which Ultron, an automaton hellbent on destroying humanity, has won.

Intervistato per il segmente youtube DC All-Access l’editor-in-chief della DC Comics Dan DiDio ha parlato di Convergence, prossimo mega-evento di casa DC, e della sua origine.

DiDio ha svelato che il termine Convergence è stato usato per la prima in DC Universe Presents #7: Challengers of the Unknown, scritto da DiDio stesso e Jerry Ordway, ma che ai più è sfuggito:

 

Alla base di Convergence, dice DiDio, c’è la domanda fondamentale: “Dove finiscono i mondi che muoiono?” e la DC come sapete è ricca di mondi e linee temporali che sono state modificate e/o abbandonate nella sua quasi centennale storia editoriale.

L’E-i-C conferma anche che la scelta di recuperare la continuity pre-New 52 è stata dettata dalla volontà di dare un senso di chiusura a quell’universo ed ai fans più nostalgici.

Didio conclude dicendo che Convergence non è solo un’opera per nostalgici ma esaminerà anche l’essenza dell’eroismo.

il maxi evento attualmente in corso negli USA in cui molti eroi e villain Marvel hanno visto il proprio orientamento morale ruotare di 180°

, potrebbe servire alla Marvel per dirimere una delle questioni più intricate della sua storia, sia di quella interna alla narrazione di decenni di fumetti che di quella”commerciale” cinematografica: lo status di Pietro e Wanda Maximoff, alias Quicksilver e Scarlet Witch.

Fino ad oggi i due sono stati identificati come mutanti, figli di Magneto e di Magda Eisenhardt, ma i motivi per dubitare di questa classificazione, secondo alcuni, non sono mai mancati: Pietro ha infatti spesso mostrato molta affinità con il mondo Inumano, mentre i poteri magici di Wanda sono sempre stati difficili da definire. Il legame che entrambi hanno, dalle loro origini, con l’Alto Evoluzionario, getta poi altri dubbi sulla loro natura.

Fuori dal lore, dubbi ci sono anche sul versante cinecomics: i due sono mutanti (ed è sempre stato così) dunque la Fox può usarli, e lo ha già fatto, nei film sugli X-Men, ovviamente senza far cenno al loro “secondo lavoro” come Vendicatori. Ma proprio perché sono Avengers anche la Marvel li farà comparire in Age of Ultron, senza però mai nominare la parola “mutanti” (cinematograficamente proprietà della Fox). Una situazione abbastanza intricata.

Apparentemente la Casa delle Idee ha però deciso di chiarire una volta per tutte la questione in Axis #7, di cui grazie a Bleeding Cool vi mostriamo queste immagini:

Il 14 Gennaio 2015 uscirà negli USA Star Wars #1 di Jason Aaron e John Cassaday. Racconterà le avventure di Han, Luke e Leia tra i primi due film della trilogia originale e sarà, commercialmente, l’evento più importante degli ultimi 20 anni per il mercato fumettistico nordamericano.

La Marvel (che torna dopo anni a produrre comics sulla saga di George Lucas) ha infatti confermato l’indiscrezione che vi avevamo riportato qualche giorno fa insieme a qualche pagina in anteprima: Star Wars #1 ha già ricevuto ordini dai rivenditori per oltre 1 milione di copie, cifra che un fumetto USA non raggiungeva da decenni. A favorire il superamento del record contribuiscono sicuramente le molte variant cover che la casa editrice e diverse fumetterie in giro per gli Stati Uniti proporranno ai lettori.

Già, perché i collezionisti che volessero avere Star Wars #1 in tutte ma proprio tutte le copertine possibili dovrà prepararsi ad acquistare almeno 45 albi (A Gennaio dovrebbero essere in tutto 66). Che la Forza sia con voi.

Insomma millemila variant per Star Wars#1, bella quella di Cassaday ma la variant di Alex Ross è un capolavoro!

Il Senior Vice-President of Publishing della Marvel Tom Brevoort è stato interpellato sia da CBR che da newsarama.com su quella che è stata di fatto la notizia della settimana ovvero la possibile ret-con delle origini di Scarlet Witch e Quicksilver avvenuta su Axis #7 come vi abbiamo prontamente riportato.

 

Brevoort ovviamente non si è sbilanciato rimandando alla lettura di Axis #8 e Uncanny Avengers #1, in uscita a gennaio, tuttavia è interessante riportare due passaggi dalle interviste.

Puoi parlarci delle origini del twist nel plot di Axis #7?

 

Certo che posso parlarne. La storia di Quicksilver e Scarlet Witch è stata abbastanza stabile negli ultimi anni ma andando indietro nel tempo non è stato sempre così. Hanno una storia confusa e bizzarra. Ci sono state raccontate diverse cose su di loro, spesso contradditorie, ed abbiamo creduto a diverse cose su chi o cosa fossero. Stiamo scavando su questa cosa.

 

Mentre newsarama.com senza peli sulla lingua chiede:

 

Tom mancano pochi mesi ad Avengers: Age of Ultron, potresti dirci se questa è una mossa per avvicinare le origini di Wanda e Pietro dell’universo fumettistico a quelle dell’universo cinematografico?

 

Come sempre è tutto legato, semplicemente a raccontare una storia.

 

Brevoort sempre voler glissare direttamente sull’argomento ma sembrerebbe ammettere che un cambio di origini non sarebbe così inaspettato.
