Does he inject baby-pig semen into his face? Is he ever going to do another Birdman sequel? As the press corps swoops down on him, decontextualizing and uploading his answers practically before he’s given them, they ask him about everything except the reason he’s there. Riggan stays polite, but he’s unnerved—there’s no escape. “In that scene,” says Keaton, “I was going, Oh, yeah, this is not Riggan. In this moment? This is me. The moment when the journalist says, ‘You turned down Birdman 4?’ Okay, yeah. Me. Me me me me me. I mean, all that stuff...” He smacks the front page of the Times. “Read this! And people give a f--- about who plays Batman? Honestly, I’m not an elitist by any stretch of the imagination, but the fact that anybody would think about it, I just don’t get. So in that moment, I went, Yeah, this is me, specifically.” He pauses. “Unless there’s other guys. Maybe Christian Bale did the same thing.” So...uh....would this be a good time to ask about Batman, or has this whole line of discussion been a trap designed to deter any journalist from coming off as an imbecile who missed the whole point of the movie and just can’t let Keaton’s past go?Turns out it’s fine. Keaton doesn’t mind talking about Batman at all; he’s proud of it. When he was cast in the first film, which opened 25 years ago this summer, he faced a level of fanboy fury that was limited only by the fact that in those pre-Internet days, all that complainers could do was write lengthy screeds to Warner Bros. and to comic-book letters pages. “The only risk in deciding to do the movie,” says Keaton, “was that I knew if this misses, it misses really big. There was tension. A lot of money was being spent. And I was dressing in a big black rubber suit.” He remembers Batman as a lonely time; the film shot in London, his son (now a musician) was then very young, and Keaton would fly back to the U.S. on the Concorde often to see him. The protest against Keaton’s casting turned to praise almost as soon as Batman opened—and by the end of its run, it was one of the 10 highest-grossing films ever released up to that point. But the initial skepticism stung enough for Keaton to end an acceptance speech at the 1990 People’s Choice Awards by saying, “All you gotta do is tell me no, baby! So keep those cards and letters coming.”Would he do it again? “If it was Tim Burton directing?” he replies. “In a heartbeat. Tim, in movies, really invented the whole dark-superhero thing. He started everything, and some of the guys who have done these movies since then don’t say that, and they’re wrong.” After returning for the 1992 sequel Batman Returns, he and Burton both thought that a third installment delving into Batman’s past would be an interesting way to go; instead, Warner Bros. asked for a new director, bigger supervillains, and a lighter, more colorful look. “I hadn’t been stupid about it,” says Keaton. “I always knew it was a big machine with a big studio and corporation and board behind it. But the simple answer was, It wasn’t any good. I was nice. I said to them, ‘This is a really interesting character with a dual personality.’ I tried to make them understand. But when somebody says to you, ‘Does it have to be so dark?’... I thought, Are we talking about the same character? So finally I just said no. And as the years wore on, I think more and more people said, ‘Yeah, I get what that dude was about.’” (Whether the dude to whom he’s referring is himself or Batman, it feels like vindication.) He’s never looked back—nor has he returned to those films. “Chris Nolan is great,” he says, “but I’ve never seen any of the Batman movies all the way through. I know they’re good. I just have zero interest in those kinds of movies. I mean, people are asking me, ‘Is Ben Affleck going to be any good?’ And my attitude is, First of all, why would you ask me? Second, he’s probably going to be very good, and third, frankly, it’s all set up now so that you’re weirdly kind of safe. Once you get in those suits, they really know what to do with you. It was hard then; it ain’t that hard now. Now I can say this, because for many reasons, I never allowed myself to say it at the time: It was never about Batman for me. It was always about Bruce Wayne. He’s funny! He’s screwed-up! The guy is the coolest motherf---er in the world, and he’s messed-up! As for the other half of the part: Just work that suit, man. Just let that suit go to town." “But listen,” he says. “We could be talking a year from now and I could be doing one of those movies. That’s very possible!” He laughs. And for a moment, Keaton sounds like Riggan—a veteran actor handling with bemusement and determination the current realities of his chosen profession, a world in which, in Iñárritu’s words, “all those guys in suits fighting other guys in suits can get a little bit annoying. Sometimes it’s fun. But honestly, how many good ones can you do? It’s not the movies I don’t like. (non ci sono spoiler, anche perche' in tutta franchezza, visto il film, non ce ne potrebbero manco essere) Saro' davvero molto curioso di leggere recensioni italiane di questo film. Perche' questo e' un film davvero americano nell'anima. (per non citare Broadway) Essenzialmente, due ipotetiche keywords che potrebbero rappresentare il film, perche' col film non c'entrano nulla, potrebbero essere: Aaron Sorkin Extradiegetico La prima keyword e' data dal fatto che la narrazione segue per quasi tutto il film un "Walk and Talk" che sembrerebbe quasi scritto da lui, ma ovviamente non c'entra (non penso proprio che sia accreditato in qualche modo) La seconda keyword e' data dal fatto che l'accompagnamento musicale e' di puro stampo Jazz, di batteria Jazz. Batteria che segue i passi, gli spostamenti, i movimenti, i battiti del cuore, i respiri.Ma appunto alla fine viene mostrato che quella batteria esiste all'interno del film, quindi e' diegetica. Ci potrebbero essere ulteriori chiavi di lettura con le armi, lo show business, quel tipo di disonesta' permeante la struttura stessa della societa', che vede tutti progressivamente imbruttirsi, diventare altro e altri, colpirsi e ritrovarsi, non capirsi ed accettarsi. C'e' tanta di quella vita che scorre in questo film, vita col bollino di autenticita' e non raccontata, da far quasi paura. Dico 'quasi' perche', che cazzo c'e' da aver paura, e' semplice vita, esistenze che scorrono su diversi livelli e pensate un po', volano pure. Si, nell'aria, come dei fottuti Birdmen. Ho adorato la recitazione e i tempi mai contigentati e ben espressi quasi in accezione da blockbuster di Imitation Game, ma qua siamo decisamente su di un altro livello. A dire il vero, non sono neanche del tutto sicuro che cosa c'entri questo Birdman con i film; e' un'opera in continuo andirivieni di scavalcamento diegetico e tecnico, in cui la vicenda e' unicamente un pretesto per raccontare di aspetti di persone, non di persone, perche' parliamo di 'attori' innanzitutto; non ci puo' quindi essere logicamente un vero filo conduttore in una vicenda che di per se e' inutile e che si appropinqua praticamente col mandare in culo tutti con uno sberleffo. Oh, That's Really Real Cinema. P.s. chapeau per la produzione che ha voluto come anfitrione Michael Keaton; un po' meno perche' logicamente non vedremo altri film suoi con questo tipo di registro. P.p.s. Chi vuole vedere il compitino e parlare tanto bene o tanto male con le solite keywords di cui si riempie tanto goduriosamente la bocca, faccia il favore, vada a vedere un altro film (che c'e' tanto carino-carino quell'affare del Museo) e incidentalmente, accompagni la "giornalista" che si vede nel film ad andarsene affanc*lo. Perche' questo e' un film davvero americano nell'anima. devo ahime' dire che mi aspettavo tutto il paccume di questi giorni, ma l'incredibile invece e' che "il Doc" ha capito alla perfezione cosa intendevo (e ci ha fatto su un bello sproloquio devo dire ) Va bene cosi', ero gia' pronto a non leggere una-che-sia-una recensione italiana con un filo di acume (ad esempio mi par ieri sul Sole una collega ha sproloquiato unicamente sul 'piano sequenza', roba da galera), quindi sono a +1 e appunto, va bene cosi'.
