Indeed objectification of humans is something that is repeated in the film - the Wives, Max the bloodbag, War Boy “cannon fodder”, the Milking mothers… - Nico Lathouris received 22 sections of Max’s broad character arc from George Miller and decided to turn to numerology to find the meaning of “22″. One of the things he found was that there were “22 branches to the tree of life” - Lathouris also spent about 10 months looking at Jungian psychology to gain a deeper understanding of Max’s archetypal journey. - For Lathouris, Fury Road has a lot of deep meaning. For example he’s particularly interested in viewing it as an psychological allegory of loss. Basically Max’s journey is one of learning to deal with loss, learning to grieve and to move from a passive to an active state, to “fix what’s broken” by moving forward and helping people, learning to love etc. -“Fury Road is an epic visual poem” - Brendan McCarthy. What he meant by this is that like a poem, it can be enjoyed for the imagery and visuals, but repeated viewings and reflection reveals a much deeper meaning. - “At their heart, most stories are about survival” - George Miller believes that if a story is good, then it belongs to everyone. Its meaning is in the minds of the audience. Your interpretations are valid. Your fanfic is valid. Your headcanons are valid. - Screenwriting and storyboarding is like composing music to George Miller. - Brendan McCarthy was a super-fan of Mad Max after seeing “Road Warrior” when it was in cinemas - he saw it 20 times in cinemas and then wrote several times to George as a crazy fan. Then a few years later he wrote a pastiche of Mad Max and sent it along with a sheaf of concept drawings to George Miller and asked “whatever happened to Mad Max?” and George was so impressed with his art he invited him to LA to talk about working together on Fury Road (this was in the 90s). - Storyboarding was done (thousands of pictures) before the script was written and it was almost two decades before Fury Road was finally made. - Brendan McCarthy was not a fan of “Beyond Thunderdome” and he actually said to George Miller “don’t disappoint me” for Fury Road. (more to come soon - about what the three revealed about the story and details of the Fury Road world) “Conversations with George Miller” Part 2: Mad Max TriviaStuff I learned about the Fury Road world from George Miller, Nico Lathouris and Brendan McCarthy today at the Sydney Graphics Festival. - Angharad is the true ideological opponent of Immortan Joe. He represents a toxic ideology of death, while she represents life, the alternate way of living. As the instigator of the Wives’ escape, and the one who came up with “We Are Not Things” she was the most revolutionary of them because she saw the potential for a new way of living, and she saw clearly that “what killed the world” was a way of life that glorified killing, something that even Furiosa participated in - “We agreed - no unnecessary killing” was due to the fact that Angharad and Furiosa had actually argued about their worldviews before leaving - Angharad realised that the ideology of killing needed to end if they were truly to escape Joe’s influence, Furiosa believed that killing was necessary in the wasteland because you wouldn’t survive otherwise. They compromised with “no unnecessary killing”. - Nico Lathouris said (and I quote) that Fury Road was about “dismantling the patriarchy” and central to this idea is the fact that the economy on which Immortan’s rule was based (the ownership of water and people) was dismantled also by the end (water made available to the Wretched for free, slavery ended) - Actually Lathouris is an awesome guy, he talked so much about feminism in this event and talked specifically in regard to Angharad that her vision for a feminist utopia “seems initially naive” only because “it requires men to make such a shift in their perception and behaviour” but that ultimately her vision came true, if not in the way she expected and not while she was alive. - The reason Max doesn’t go up into the Citadel at the end is because “he hasn’t earned it yet” in terms of his own journey. (Which implies maybe he will later?) I really like this because 1) Furiosa clearly has earned it because this story was about her and her journey really, and she has achieved her arc, whereas Max has achieved a major part of his arc (fixing what’s broken) but he hasn’t achieved all of it yet. - Max’s muzzle is a garden fork. - Furiosa can read, having learned from the Many Mothers. But Angharad and the Wives are more educated than she is,, having read all the books that remain from before the apocalypse. That taught them to question the structure and foundations of their society - something that (initially) Furiosa doesn’t think to question. - Capable can identify Polecats and Flamers because 1) Furiosa prepped all the Wives on things they might encounter in the Wasteland before they left and 2) from the room where they were imprisoned, the Wives could look down on the desert and see fights and things that went on. - Toast can drive and load a gun because she grew up in the Wasteland rather than the Citadel. She was taken probably as a teenager as her family passed through the Citadel (possibly to trade?) - War Boys wear black and white paint because they know they are halflife, and their worldview is centred around death. They are trying to become like skeletons. They worship cars because cars are “immortal” in comparison to them, (also because they can fix cars and they cant fix themselves). White paint is a symbol of being halflife. You paint yourself white if you have a terminal illness. So people like the Imperators are full life, but presumably if you later found out you had a terminal illness and you were working for the Immortan you would start to paint yourself white. - War Boys were initially going to all wear penis gourds. But then George Miller thought “hang on this won’t go down well on screen” :P - Some of Max’s buttons are Australian 10c coins. - According to George, there are no War Girls. But he immediately followed that assertion with the qualifying statement that the world no longer “belonged” to him but to everyone and that everyone would have different interpretations so if you have a War Girl OC basically you have his blessing. - Everything in the wasteland is multi-purpose. So there are shopping carts attached to the sides of some war vehicles for people to sit in. - The decorative nature of things like the cars, steering wheels etc. are a reflection of the fact that even in really poverty-stricken cultures there is an artistic imperative and appreciation of beauty, so even “junk” is fashioned into art and the body is marked as a form of art and also fetishisation. #How can you say ‘no war girls’ but have Furiosa an imperator? #Obviously there was a war girl (thoughtfulfangirling) This seems to be confirming that “war boy” is a caste rather than a rank. Furiosa doesn’t have a terminal illness, so she wouldn’t have been considered a war boy/girl, or painted herself, etc. War boys can’t “climb up” the ranks to imperator because imperators are full lifes. Furiosa must have found some other role in the Citadel (mechanic? guard? sniper?) before Joe made her imperator. Getting promoted is probably pretty arbitrary based on Joe’s whims and getting noticed by him. This. That’s kind of what George was going for - the fact that Furiosa is an Imperator - she’s a full-life like all the other imperators. How she got to where she was will be explored in the “Furiosa” prequel. Apparently the story’s also going to be about how she “many times” tried to escape and failed and how she finally set up the “deal” to get safe passage through the pass. Miller è dai tempi di Strike Again che ha assunto uno stile cartoonesco dileggiante nei confronti delle tutine, anche in ASS tra Wonder Woman che etichetta gli uomini come banche del seme ambulanti, goddamn Batman e Hal si è al limite della parodia. Se lo si legge in quest'ottica è ancora in gamba, se ci si aspetta l'autore di Daredevil o Anno Uno si rimane fortemente delusi.

Io avevo anche smesso di leggerlo perchè la comicità non la trovavo divertente e la gag che ruota attorno a Saitama alla terza aveva già stancato, poi arriva il sottotesto serio che salva la giornata col primo antogonista e fai la hola col secondo che setta/setterà uno standard quando Murata arriverà a disegnarlo, peccato che ques'ultimo si sia messo a infilarci un filler proprio quando lo si vedeva all'orizzonte.

Roger, è che Joss Wedon è fermamente contrario ai director's cut (così ho letto in varie sue interviste), per lui il theatrical cut è il final cut e al massimo ti becchi le scene tagliate in coda. Poi col senno di poi, non mi piace più nemmeno la scena della fattoria: sa troppo di artefatto momento messo lì giusto per fare un po' di character development e di scuse a posteriori per il trattamento riservato a Renner nel primo film. (e l'Occhio di Falco borghese e casalingo non mi convince nemmeno un po'!) Io questa cosa che Whedon ha voluto mettere in primo piano Occhio di Falco nel sequel per scusarsi con Renner non lo capisco, ha un personaggio minore e che rasenta l'utilità, non è una superstar di Hollywood, anzi dovrebbe esser solo grato per i migliori e più remunerativi ruoli che gli porterà la parte e invece Whedon si prostra che neanche con Tom Cruise? Come detto ci sono storie meno riuscite di altre, per esempio Eroi locali che è una raccolta di storie brevi è ottima rispetto mi sembra ad un Album di famiglia meno ispirato. Perchè leggerle? Perchè sono storie adulte, ben scritte e disegnate che non si fermano alla pura scazzottata ma costruiscono un mondo coerente con la presenza di superesseri, i personaggi sono tridimensionali, sfaccettati, In DC si può cancellare Montevideo o in Marvel spostare la corte di Odino in aperta campagna senza ripercussioni mentre qui se ne vedrebbero le integrazioni e le conseguenze. Ma per l'appunto sono rivolte a un pubblico troppo ristretto e che già si sta distaccando dal leggere fumetti impoverendosi ulteriormente che non si chiede se è più forte Hulk o Superman e di conseguenza DC&Marvel creano prodotti di ampia diffusione.

Ma il punto di Astro City non sono i supereroi che infatti o variano continuamente o quelli che vengono riproposti rimangono sullo sfondo ma il ripescare le atmosfere golden age con la sensibilità odierna, c'è qualche volume più debole dell'altro ma nel complesso il livello è medio-alto. Per Image intendiamo in generale o l'ultima ondata in atto? Presumendo la seconda c'è da dire che ultimamente è tornata agli spiriti degli albori con storie di qualità e portatrici d'aria fresca, tra quelle citabili Invincible, lo spiderman di Kirkman Lazarus di Rucka impreziosito dai disegni di Lark Battle Pope di Paul Pope Chew di Layman Black Science di Remender anche se le vette raggiunte con X-Force paiono non più raggiungibili In generale comunque dove si cade si dovrebbe cadere bene, come detto sopra oggi l'Image è il terzo incomodo che gode e traina il settore tra Marvel e DC, poi dipende dai gusti personali quale serie seguire.

Tony giusto ogni tanto presenta qualche nuovo gadget, Bruce è un badass anche dal punto di vista manageriale anche se lavorando dietro le quinte l'uomo copertina è Lucius, sul versante acquisizione ostile ha trattato come uno zerbino anche Luthor più di una volta. Tony supera Bruce solo nel reparto scienza per il resto se lo sgranocchia come stuzzichino.

Ripensandoci non sembra tanto campata per aria la teoria del telecronista del danno alle Ferrari non mostrando gli sponsor sulle auto, prima che a Raik saltasse la telecamera sul musetto credo che i pochi secondi dedicati ad entrambi fin lì riguardassero solo inquadrature da sopra l'abitacolo dove vedevi giusto il casco.
