Il problema, così come la reazione che a noi pare folle, deve essere contestualizzato per essere compreso.

Un passo indietro.
Ricordate il cinema in Colorado dove, alla prima di The Dark Knight Rises, un tizio sparò sul pubblico ammazzando e ferendo un sacco di gente?
Ebbene, l'intera catena di cinema è stata citata per danni, per non aver fatto nulla per proteggere il proprio pubblico.
"Sono sotto il tuo tetto, tu sei responsabile per la mia incolumità", tanto per farla semplice
La causa è andata avanti anni, con spese notevoli da parte della catena di cinema.
Sì, esatto, per un evento del quale non aveva alcuna idea e per il quale non aveva avuto alcun avvertimento.

Ora pensate cosa succederebbe se effettivamente qualche stronzo organizzasse un attacco terroristico (anche fatto in casa) con la scusa della rappresaglia per il fatto che quel cinema non aveva voluto rinunciare a proiettare The Interview.
Cioè, pensate a che casini legali andrebbe incontro quel cinema (o quella catena di cinema) che decidesse di proiettare un film "a rischio", sapendo che c'è una minaccia pubblicamente dichiarata contro quella pellicola.

Per questo le tre catene di cinema più importanti d'America hanno deciso di non proiettare il film.
Ovvero la grande maggioranza di sale cinematografiche americane ha deciso di non assumersi la responsabilità per l'incolumità dei propri clienti in un territorio, quello delle minacce terroristiche, che compete all'NSA e all'FBI.
La decisione della Sony di non far uscire più The Interview è successiva alla presa di posizione di dette catene.

Ora, noi possiamo disquisire quanto vogliamo sull'opportunità o sulla sensatezza di tali decisioni, così come possiamo irridere la percezione degli Americani riguardo ad una minaccia che noi troviamo veramente assurda, ma basta ricordarsi che si parla degli Stati Uniti per capire che il problema non è mai stato di sicurezza, quanto di responsabilità civile e penale.

Ok, magistrati idioti non si trovano solo in Italia... ma allora se dovessero farlo uscire in DVD e BD poi sarebbero le catene di vendita a cacarsi addosso?

In effetti, come ha ben spiegato Erik, quella della Sony non è una reazione diretta alle minacce nord-coreane (vere o presunte che siano) ma alla decisione di alcune catene di non ospitare il film nelle loro sale. Difficile dargli torto, io, se fossi esercente, non mi assumerei tale responsabilità. E no, il film non vedrà mai la luce nemmeno per l'home-video o su piattaforme di streaming. E' un capitolo chiuso per sempre.

Metterlo su disco o in VOD non cambierebbe nulla, ma sposterebbe solo l'attenzione su soggetti diversi.
L'unica possibilità è che qualche catena di film diciamo indie decida di acquistare il film da Sony per proiettarlo nelle proprie sale.
Avendo poco da perdere, non avendo piattaforme VOD da saccheggiare, né impianti distributivi da minacciare, sono gli unici che potrebbero avere voglia di rischiare.

Credo che il film farà la sua comparsa SOLO se e quando le autorità statunitensi saranno riuscite ad identificare e fermare i responsabili dei suddetti attacchi informatici.
Difficile ma non impossibile.

Per ora e per il futuro prossimo ha ragione il Fantasma: The Interview non vedrà mai la pubblicazione.

Comunque l'FBI ha appena confermato che dietro agli attacchi informatici si cela il Nord-Corea e i pirati hanno annunciato la cessazione delle ostilità a patto che "you never let the movie released, distributed or leaked in any form of, for instance, DVD or piracy.”

In the Dr. Evil skit on Saturday Night Live there was a line about how do you kill a movie, move it to January. Well, Warner Bros must have faith in their new “rebooted” spy franchise as they moved it from January to August 14th, 2015 release date. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. stars Henry Cavill (Man Of Steel) as Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) as Illya Kuryakin in Guy Ritchie’s new take on this classic 1960’s television series.

This is the first official photo released for the film as Cavill and Hammer are joined by actress Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) who will play Gaby Teller.

Well this is cool.  Although the five major theater chains decided to drop The Interview, and remain committed to not showing the film, other theaters are willing to screen the movie.  Specifically, the Plaza Atlanta and the Alamo Drafthouse have been authorized to show the picture on Christmas Day according to Variety.  Additionally, The Wrap is reporting that some VOD outlets will get the movie, and that an official announcement is coming later today.

It’s possible that other theaters could be added to the list, but nothing is official on that front yet.  We only know for sure that the Alamo Drafthouse and Plaza Atlanta are getting it as far as movie theaters go.  Hit the jump for the tweet from Alamo chief Tim League and the Facebook post from Plaza Atlanta, which includes the showtimes for the Christmas Day screening.  We’ll update this story as we learn further details about Sony’s release plans, but this is very exciting (especially for an Atlanta resident like me). [Update: Sony has released an official statement, but it makes no mention of a VOD release.  You can read the studio's statement after the jump along with a tweet by star, co-writer, and co-director Seth Rogen commenting on this new development.]

Update: In what will be the highest profile VOD release in history, THR reports that Sony Pictures is making The Interview available to rent or own starting today on YouTube, Google Play, Xbox, and its own dedicated website seetheinterview.com.  You can rent the film for $5.99 or purchase it in HD for $15.99.  Additionally, Variety reports that Sony is in talks to get The Interview up on Netflix within the next few days.  Thus (hopefully) ends this insane saga.  Our original story follows below.
