Premessa:

 

The plot of the film involves a realistic view of what would happen if 25 story tall monsters showed up, and delves into the reaction that humanity would have. Besides beachfront property losing all appeal, what weapons would be needed to fight these creatures, what would the human reaction be? Del Toro described the film as being about scale in all elements, juxtaposing the human scale of the protagonists with the massive epic of the monsters and robots battling. He apologized for having to be vague and “haiku-ish” but wasn’t able to properly

disclose plot events without ruining the film. Del Toro had been fond of his friend Travis Beachem’s script for Pacific Rim, and was jealous of whoever would get to direct it. The benefit of Del Toro’s planned adaptation of “At the Mountains of Madness” collapsing was that it opened his schedule so that he could direct the film.

 

Trama:

 

The first is an alternate version of Earth in the near future, decades after a historic date in November 2012 when the first kaiju, a towering Godzilla-like beast, emerged from a hole in the Pacific Ocean and attacked the city of Osaka, Japan. The second is “The Anteverse,” another universe on the other side of that gaping portal, 5 miles below our ocean’s surface. Since the first attack, the rim has been “spitting out” a variety of gigantic monsters at an increasing rate, which then stride out of the ocean and begin destroying sea-bordering cities, like Tokyo and Los Angeles. In order to combat these monstrous, otherworldly menaces, the military developed the “Jaeger” program, which trains teams of two pilots to jointly operate massive, building-sized mechanized suits of armor and high-tech weaponry.

But there’s a human angle to it, too, “the part we can’t divulge that Travis came up with, that made it click [for Guillermo].” And Legendary seems committed to making that part work, too , which lead the director to announce “I’m barren, otherwise I would bear Legendary’s child.” He praised the company for letting him find “the perfect fucking actors for the role. To make a movie with this size and this scope and be able to cast with the greatest fucking actors is a dream come true.”

 

“There’s much more to it than the giant monsters and giant robots,” he said. “We want to make it a big what if: what would happen in the real world if a twenty-five story thing came out of the sea and started destroying cities? How would the world change? What weapons do we need to develop to fight a thing like that? It’s not a fantastic distant future to which we have no relationship. We wanted to make it in the now.”

 

He elaborated just a bit. “Everything as geeks and fans we ask ourselves about giant monsters and kaiju I wanted to answer in the movie. We created a whole world around that one giant variable. This will not be a movie that has only spectacle and scope.”

Contento invece, il talento è innegabile (unico muso giallo con una nomination agli Oscar) e Del Toro non sceglie mai a cazzo di cane.
