>You've worked on the second opening, but the fact is that even before that series writer Yoji Enokido had consulted with you about various things, right?

It's more that I listened to him talk about what kind of series he wanted to do next. I think it was around the time 'Aim for the Top 2!' ended. He said, "I want to do something about a space boy." When I heard that, I thought something along the lines of a child version of 'Captain Future,' but I guess Enokido was thking about something like a boy version of 'Princess Comet.' Sure enough, I think that's what turned out to be 'Star Driver.' Consider what a term like "space boy" represents: a certain vitality; a main character with unwaivering resolve; facing forward at all times. That era when that sound of "space boy" fit just right with manga and anime, like 'Space Boy Soran'-- it's the feeling of main characters of that era that (he) wanted to include.

>In the context of robot anime, it's a feeling that predates 'Mobile Suit Gundam'?

That's true. Perhaps 'Star Driver' does have a feel to it that goes back earlier than 'Gundam.' We've been too domesticated by 'Gundam' (laugh) and have forgotten that there was a history even prior to it. Humans lived even before rice crops; they made a life out of hunting for tens of thousands of years. That in itself is no less respectable. I suppose there is that feeling to it.

>Making a robot anime these days must be pretty tough. Having worked on 'Rebuild of Evangelion' as a director, what do you think?

This is something Enokido told me: Whether it's 'Mobile Suit Gundam' or 'Neon Genesis Evangelion,' the enemies, too, have their own charm.

In 'Gundam,' the Principality of Zeon and Char have about as much popularity as the Gundam and Amuro. Even in 'Evangelion,' the enemies known as Angels had a lot of work and interesting ideas put into them; they're very interesting visually. In robot anime that create an era, I think crafting enemies even more appealing than the main characters is essential. In watching 'Star Driver,' I get the sense that it's doing just that. There's more compelling drama in why the enemies have to pilot Cybodies rather than the main characters. (laugh)

>You mean it's like, "Just how interesting can we make the Glittering Crux?"

From here on, the main characters' drama is going to be depicted, but I think it looked that way for the first half, at least. It's the people of the Glittering Crux that I want to see piloting Cybodies more than anything! (laugh)

>I think that's because you like Benio too much. (laugh)

How did you know? Well, that is true. The school nurse (Midori) is good, too. (laugh)

>(laugh). Our opening remarks have gone a bit long. Let's get to the content regarding the opening. First is something everyone has wondered about: What meaning is there in the how the first portion starts in the same way as the first opening?

I personally love the first opening. I think it's among the best of recent anime. As an opening, it's a bit different, but it's really cool. Honestly, if I had been told to make something like that, I would have been worried. An order came from the director, Igarashi, saying for the second one to be "more like a typical robot anime opening."

>I see. So it was a order from the director telling you to take the easy path.

And so, since there's precedence in taking the opening of a Bones product and working on it as Studio khara (※production studio for 'Rebuild of Evangelion') , I went and watched the openings of 'Mobile Fighter G Gundam.'

>Why was that?

On 'G Gundam,' Masahiko Minami (president of Bones) acted as producer, and Hideaki Anno (general manager of 'Rebuild of Evangelion') worked on storyboards, you see.

>Ahaha!

So, in the second opening of 'G Gundam,' material from the first opening and new material are brought together, with the cuts reorganized. I thought, "So that's how to do it..." (laugh)

>Ehh! (kaugh)

I wondered whether I could do something like using material from the first opening in a new sequence. In the end, all the things I thought up could only stay organized in my head.

>I see. So this opening wound up being comprised of a rapid highlight of the characters' dramas and the series' themes?

That's right. The feeling is like the impression I get from Sunrise robot anime. A rapid sequence showing the emotions and drama of the characters.

>It's like it's letting you predict future developments, especially with the cuts of the sisters Mizuno and Marino.

I wondered whether I overdid it there. I went to the director to see what he thought, but he said it was fine since the opening was changing and everything would be made clear relatively soon. I wasn't a part of 'Star Driver' from the very beginning. When starting on the opening, there were many things I didn't know, so I was shown the entire script to get a sense of the setting. In the case of 'Star Driver,' there are many threads that become clearer in the latter half, and they become important keys to story. That's why I had to make sure not to spoil too much... There were those kinds of difficulties involved.

>Speaking of spoilers, there's that Cybody Tauburn is fighting in the battle scene. It's the Reshbal that Head pilots, but at the time it's a Cybody we've never seen before that's fighting. (laugh)

I consulted Director Igarashi about that, too. I was talking about a Cybody to go up against Tauburn, so I asked whether I could put it in.

>I see. And just after that part, a giant Cybody appears. That's a Cybody that still hasn't shown up in the main series.

People with good intuition will pick up on it, I think... But, well, if you think about it, even in 'G Gundam,' you didn't see so much as a shadow of the Devil Gundam in the very beginning, but it still showed up in the opening. I guess that's a guarantee when it comes to robots. Really, though, I wanted to get a Cybercasket in there, too...

>What do you mean?

The Cybercaskets are 3DCG, right? I thought some really interesting things could be done with those, but...

>They were blown up in episode 17. (laugh)

When I read the script, I realized, "They're not going to be showing up anymore!" (laugh) There was also Zero Time which caused some trouble. It's an environment with nothing around, so even if it's Cybodies you have taking action, it's really no different than a fight between Kamen Riders. Normally, you can do things like use the surrounding buildings, but those angles unique to robot anime are unusable.

>Not at all. I think it turned out to be quite an intense piece of robot action. Well, then, feel free to close with whatever you like.

All right. Director Igarashi said to me, "You absolutely have to put the Vice President in there!" so I made sure to put it in an important part. (laugh) Honestly, at first, I thought, "There's just no way a FOX is showing up here!" (laugh) Later, though, when I heard that 'The Little Prince' was its original inspiration, I understood. Just as even 'Evangelion' has Pen Pen, I was reminded once again how that, too, is an important part of robot anime. (laugh)
